Our Vision

We are steadfast advocates of Direct and Participatory Democracy, grounded in the unwavering belief that the sovereignty of Sierra Leone fundamentally resides with its people. Our vision is rooted in a democratic framework that ensures every citizen is not merely a passive observer but an active participant, possessing both the right and the practical opportunity to shape the decisions that impact their lives, communities, and the nation at large.
Direct Democracy, as we define it, encompasses mechanisms that empower the populace to make decisions on laws and public policies directly, without relying exclusively on elected representatives. These mechanisms include instruments such as referenda, citizens’ assemblies, and publicly initiated legislation. Through these tools, we seek to nurture a political culture where power is decentralised, transparency is institutionalised, and political authority is consistently accountable to the citizenry.
Participatory Democracy advances this vision further by promoting deep, ongoing civic engagement beyond periodic electoral events. It involves inclusive deliberation, community-led governance, and the systemic inclusion of marginalised and underrepresented groups—particularly women, youth, persons with disabilities, and rural populations. By investing in civic education, establishing accessible platforms for engagement, and pursuing institutional reforms, we aim to eliminate structural barriers to political participation and cultivate a governance model that is responsive, inclusive, and equitable.

Our ultimate aspiration is to create a just and inclusive Sierra Leone—a society where justice is both procedural and substantive; where social equity ensures that all individuals have access to the opportunities, services, and protections they deserve; and where inclusiveness is deeply ingrained across all sectors of public life. This vision is not mere aspirational rhetoric but a principled commitment to democratic transformation.

We are equally devoted to establishing this participatory ethos as the foundation of sustainable national progress. Aligning democratic engagement with national development priorities ensures that citizens actively participate in shaping policies in education, health, infrastructure, and environmental stewardship, making development not only more equitable but also more resilient and enduring.

In essence, our advocacy extends beyond mere reform of political structures. It calls for a profound shift in how Sierra Leoneans view their roles in the democratic process. We believe that a genuinely democratic society flourishes when its people are not merely governed but are active participants in shaping their destiny.

This vision fully aligns with the foundational values enshrined in the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, particularly Chapter II, Section 5, which declares:

  1. Government and the People

(1) The Republic of Sierra Leone shall be a State based on the principles of Freedom, Democracy and Justice.

(2) It is accordingly declared that—

(a) Sovereignty belongs to the people of Sierra Leone, from whom the Government, through this Constitution, derives all its powers, authority and legitimacy.

(b) The security, peace, and welfare of the people of Sierra Leone shall be the primary purpose and responsibility of the Government, and to this end, it shall be the duty of the Armed Forces, the Police, Public Officers and all security agents to protect and safeguard the people of Sierra Leone; and

(c) The participation of the people in the governance of the State shall be ensured following the provisions of this Constitution.
